Moving with children is exciting although it can also challenging. From the physical challenges to the emotional ones, use these tips to make your move as drama-free as possible.
1) Prepare them emotionally. Talk about what is going to happen when you move. Read them books (I love this one!) and/or show them age appropriate shows depicting what it’s like to move. The more you talk about it, the less scary it will feel for them. If possible, bring them to their new home and school beforehand. The more familiar it will feel to them, the calmer they’ll feel. Explain to them that it’s normal and very common for them to have many big feelings about the move.
2) Involve them in the process in an age appropriate way. For example, let them help pack, sort through stuff, label boxes etc. Let them choose some things to keep in a small bag that will be transported with them. Their involvement will give them a sense of control which as a result, should ease their stress a bit. And don’t forget to include comfort items into their bag that you know will help them (blankets, pacifiers, stuffed animals, etc).
3) Keep routine as much as possible before, during, and after the move. Because children thrive on routine, do your best to continue their normal routines such as meal time, nap time, bedtime, etc. Consistency will go along way in unfamiliar territory.
4) Hire movers. The less stress you’ll be, the more patience and emotional energy you’ll have for your little ones. Contact us for a free quote!
5) Arrange childcare for moving day. If possible, have a family member or trusted babysitter help care for your children on moving day. This will benefit you and your children. Accept all the help that you can get!
6) Childproof your home before your children get there. Unpack unsafe items to their rightful places so curious minds don’t have access to dangerous things.
7) Unpack your children’s rooms first. The quicker you can get them settled, the more settled they’ll feel.
8) Let them choose a new addition to their room. Be it a new comforter with their favorite character, a stuffed animal, etc- anything to get them excited for their new room.
9) Explore the neighborhood together. Take them to a park, a new restaurant, for ice cream, etc. This will help them feel excited about their new surroundings.
10) Most importantly, give them grace. Moving is emotional and overwhelming for people of all ages. Understand that they’re trying to work through their big feelings. Have patience and show them continuous love.
In conclusion, moving with small children isn’t easy but these tips can help make the transition easier. Hopefully you’ll get through this challenging season and your new home will feel like home in no time!
